We’ve all felt it; if just for a moment. Everything quiets down, attention locks in, the chatter falls away. It’s that sense of being tuned in—with terrain, with partners, with conditions; without forcing.

Flow comes from the intentional application of skill to an appropriate challenge. Too little you get bored. Too much you are overwhelmed.

Seeking flow in the mountains happens more easily with a mentor. In some situations, it’s the only way. Many early challenges are too great without seriously risking safety. This is why many become stuck.

Avalanche Development Program

AIARE Level 1
AIARE Rescue
Structured Mentorship

Togwotee Pass, WY
JAN 12-15, 2026
Tuition: $775*

Our Avalanche Development Program is built for skiers and riders who want confidence, not just a certificate. Consisting of AIARE Level 1, AIARE Rescue, and intentional mentorship. Small groups, hands-on field work, and experienced guides turn theory into applied skill. You’ll learn snowpack assessment, terrain evaluation, companion rescue, and group travel strategies in real mountain conditions from AMGA-trained guides. Every exercise is designed to help you think critically, make sound decisions, and move safely in backcountry terrain.

Complete AIARE Level 1 and AIARE Rescue certification while gaining practical experience. You’ll cover avalanche fundamentals, hazard recognition, terrain navigation, and group management. Rescue drills simulate real emergencies, giving you skills that stick. Unlike programs that focus on lectures, we emphasize action: you practice, you respond, you learn. We teach, mentor, and close the feedback loop. By the end, you’ll have the knowledge and confidence to act decisively in the backcountry.

This program is more than instruction—it’s apprenticeship. Our guides are seasoned backcountry travelers who provide hands-on mentorship every step of the way. Mentorship  starts before and continues after your program. You’ll receive immediate feedback, see expert decision-making in action, and learn to apply judgment in complex terrain. Mentorship here means learning from experience, no egos, no hidden knowledge; your growth is personal, deliberate, and measurable.

Take advantage of our inaugural season pricing and join the first cohort of students in this mentor-driven program. Limited spots ensure personalized attention and a genuine apprenticeship experience. You’ll train with a lean, expert team, gain real backcountry judgment, and take away what big, corporate programs just can’t offer: decision-making that comes from doing. This season is your chance to step into the line of mentorship and make your first tracks under expert guidance.

Guided Riding/Skiing

We love building custom programs for groups that want dedicated time, focused learning, and a mentor-driven experience. These private courses are perfect for military, law enforcement, and SAR teams who prefer tight-knit groups, as well as corporate groups, college programs, families, government organizations, small ski areas, outdoor-rec departments, and motivated individuals who are ready to invest in their progression now.

If you need a single course, short program, or a full-season progression, we’re fired up to craft training around your goals, timeline, and terrain. This is the kind of work we get excited about—small groups build rapport, trust, and reinforce learning.

Our Founder

Jason Camacho

I started Flowstate Backcountry to give people something I couldn’t find when I needed it most—avalanche education and guiding that’s personal, disciplined, and rooted in real mentorship.

My path runs through 1st Ranger Battalion, a long stretch as a drilling engineer, and a parallel life guiding in the mountains, where sometimes precision and calm under pressure are the only currency that matters. That kind of focus only happens when your skills are truly appropriate to the challenge.

I’ve spent the last decade seeking mentors and training through AMGA, AIARE, NOLS, and informal learning. That search shaped a teaching and mentorship style that’s deliberate, uncluttered, and rooted in clarity: simple decisions, clean movement, and a mind that’s actually present.

We run small groups with honest instruction and no “hidden knowledge”. We built a culture around attention rather than ego. No performative guiding, no certification mill, no checking boxes—just real mentorship and mountain education with intention behind every step.

As the official AIARE provider for Central Wyoming College, we’re committed to access, professionalism, and growing a strong local community of backcountry travelers.

My promise is this: you’ll get guidance that’s grounded, patient, and shaped by experience—training that sharpens both your skill and your awareness.

This founding season is the beginning of a long arc—building a program that helps people meet the mountains with clarity, confidence, and presence.
